This Solo Survival Challenge was inspired by my favourite childhood book: HATCHET, by Gary Paulsen.
I construct multiple bushcraft shelters and showcase a diverse range of primitive survival techniques while fishing, hunting, and foraging for a variety of food!
This is a mix of education and entertainment. My style is meant to teach in a way that’s enjoyable and exciting to watch, hopefully inspiring everyone, including younger generations – to get out and enjoy the outdoors!
The Bear Essentials is my Brand, and I make/innovate on a bunch of camping and outdoor gear as a passion project. If you’d like to help support my journey, business, and educational content, feel free to reach out or visit The Bear Essentials Website and check out my gear!

MORE INFO + COMMENTS ANSWERED:
1) Can you still get giardia from the raw cattails? / How safe are the Cattails to eat?"
Yes, technically, you can get giardia from eating those raw shoots. I haven't heard of anyone getting it that way, but these plants are filters, and one should always wash them off first, but even then, I'm guessing the parasite can technically be in the shoot. I eat them raw because they are way more delicious that way to be honest! But yes – safer method is cook them (at a minimum, wash the new shoots off well with clean water)
Also, don't wat cattails from any roadside location simply because they are filter plants and any roadside toxins or pesticide runoff will accumulate in these plants. If you're in a survival or wild setting, there's no risk there – but in general, avoid grabbing them from the roadside!
2) Why didn't you use your bag to boil the water in?
I just wanted to ONLY use the hatchet – I found some human trash at times, too; there was a can and piece of glass and a small frayed rope, but I didn't want to use any of these so I could focus on showing what to do with just nature.
3) Is the Chaga Friction fire reliable?
I would say no. I think I got lucky and worked very hard for this fire. In the future, I would stick to the bow drill. If the Chaga is moist (which it is in pretty much all warm months, then it won't work.)
I love that book
2 fish from a stick and some self made twine is insane to me. That's awesome.

This is so funny because as an Australian boy (12-13y/o) one of the books I had to read at school was Hatchet.
The only reason we had to read that was because one of our teachers was Canadian 😄🍁
Only Hatchet … real survival. Respect!
while adeting you can duplicate the audio for the selfie cam clips to both left and right sided oudio. this is prety tough to watch while the oudio keeps switching between serio and left side only.
This is my first time watching your videos and I love videos like this I will subscribe and watch all your videos now thank you for the video

The Bible tells us in II Timothy 3:1-5, “But know this, in the last days perilous times will come.” What does that mean? The Bible is saying to mark this down, realize this, understand this, and you can be certain that in the last days, terrible, difficult, hard and violent times will come. We are living in the end times.
Man today is basically searching for three things: Some direction (the way), something that is real (the truth), and something that will last forever (life). Jesus summed it up in one verse, John 14:6 – “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me.” All of man’s questions of life are answered in this verse.
Let’s look at these three areas. First, some direction, the way. It is vacation time, and there are many ways to travel: Highway, back roads, bus, train, plane, etc. The world tells us that there are many ways, or roads, to reach God: Go to church, be a good person, list of do’s and don’ts, different religions, etc. They say there are lots of directions to reach heaven. Whatever feels best to you, do whatever is right in your own eyes. Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” The world says the road is wide open. You get to choose which path is right to get to God. But the Bible says something very different. “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.” (Matthew 7:13) Jesus did not tell his disciples about the way or show them the way or guide them along the way, but he said, “I am the way.” How can we know the way to God? It’s only through Jesus. He is the way because he is both God and man. The only way is to get saved, get right with God, and to be “born again.” Some people argue and say that this way is too narrow, but in reality, it is wide enough for the whole world to receive, if one chooses to accept him. Instead of people saying that it sounds too limited to have only one way, they should be saying “Thank God He made a way for us to get to Him!” God is always there, whispering into our souls and speaking to our hearts. He is there when we are angry, confused, scared, running from him and too busy for him. He shows us the way, if we choose to look for it.
Man today is also searching for something that is real. Truth. We need to hear the truth today. People don’t want something phony, artificial, a fad, a movement or a whim. People want something genuine and real. Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth.” Truth is a person, not a concept. This means that we can never know the truth of our circumstances unless we have first heard from Jesus. Remember the story about the disciples in the storm? They thought they were perishing. They were fishermen who knew the sea, and they knew what conditions they were in. They had allowed their circumstances to convince them that the truth was their imminent death. But they were wrong: “Truth” was asleep in the back of the boat. When Jesus spoke to the disciples, they saw the real truth of their situation. Jesus had power over nature. Often we, when we face a frightening situation, we panic and say “Lord, save me! I’m perishing!” God will remind us of his provision, saying “I can handle this situation too, and you will know more of me because of it.”
Finally, man is searching for something that will last forever: Life. We wish life, utopian life, would never end. When we go on vacation, we wish the time would never end. We wish we would win the lottery so that we would be set for life. This is life. This is what it’s all about. No, my friend, Jesus is life. Jesus said in John 10:10, “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” Jesus said: “I am the bread of life, I have the words of eternal life, whoever finds me finds life, whoever believes in me has eternal life, and whoever believes in me his name will be written down in the lamb’s Book of Life.” Our money will perish, our vacations will end, our beauty will fade, but Jesus will never end.
Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” Everything that you are looking for can be found in him. All of your questions can be answered by him. Don’t look to the world for the answers you seek. Turn to him while he may be found. Whatever it takes, turn to God while you still have an opportunity. We are living in the last days. You don’t want to miss the way, the truth, and the life. For more information, read life’s instruction manual, the Bible!
If you have any cool survival experiences, share them so we can all learn [ 9:10 ]
wow man thats really impressive i wouldnt survive with hatchet alone maybe ill give it a shot in the future. Civilian survival is really different from what i went through in military. You go wherever you want, noone is unloading 200 rounds of blank ammunition in the middle of the night while they chase you through the woods And best of all you get to sleep all you want instead of 2 hours each night😂
Next time do it with a Tom Brown Tracker?
Love the calorie content on the screen very cool to know and haven’t seen anyone else do this
why did you not do the 3 pm chicky choe choeee challenge with breadcrumbs in lala sauce and some potatoes in macachacha sauce and some chips with sour pickled wagyu japanese samurai edtition. I once camped and ate 6 wild dogs with teriyaki sauce and some rice wine. "wild dogs 10000 calorie challenge" 🐕🐕🐕🐩🐩🐩= 🍖🥩 🥓 🍲
I figured you’d talk about the hatchet I know it’s a Hudson Bay style but why this style? What brand it is ect..
If I could only take one tool.. I’d take my hatchet too I use it everyday I have the tool council camp hatchet… I’ve built three cabins with it taken down tree that were 20+ inches wide it’s the best hatchet design from the handle to the heat treated axe head the edge retention 90 degrees top edge for farror rod it’s also incredible for fine detail work lol. I live off grid and live for this sh!t lol
suprised this doesn't have mroe views, great watch for the backround while doing homework and I learned a lot from it. I dont know if you do already but if you don't you should do specific tutorials for things like cordage and guides on edible plants.
Nicely Done 👍🏿
The only reason I'm glad I'm a smoker. I always have a lighter. It's come in handy several times during my life.
Dang, a few seconds into the video i though "oh like the hachet book" then a few seconds later you mentioned it! I love the story of "The hachet"
11:09 pov: you’re the first caveman to create fire
25:09 what the hell was that?
Aagh..curse you,DJ. Because of this video, I went out and ordered the Kindle version of Gary Paulsen- HATCHET. You tempted me into this. Le sigh.
Pretty sure I don't remember the boy in the hatchet having a flashlight.
